Fisher Metal Detectors

Fisher have a fair claim to being where this whole hobby started. They’re the oldest metal detector company in the world, and they still build straightforward, well-priced machines that do an honest day’s work without a lot of fuss.

About Fisher

Fisher Research Labs was founded in 1931 by Dr Gerhard Fisher, a German-born engineer who held the first ever patent for a metal detector. He’d been building aircraft radio direction finders and noticed metal and mineralised ground threw the readings off, and from that came the “Metallascope”, a pair of wooden boxes full of coils and valves that became the first commercial detector. Nearly a century later the company is still going, which tells you something.

Company at a glance

Founded 1931 by Dr Gerhard Fisher, USA. The oldest name in the business, and still an American-made brand. Today Fisher Labs sits alongside other detecting names under the same ownership group, but the products keep the no-nonsense Fisher character.

Best Fisher Detectors

Fisher is great value for money. The F22 is a genuinely good weatherproof starter, the F44 is its slightly more capable sibling, and the F75 is the one the experienced crowd rate, a light, fast, deep machine that’s been a relic-hunter’s favourite for years. The Gold Bug Pro is the specialist of the bunch for small gold and mineralised ground. Across the range you’re paying for performance rather than a fancy screen, which suits a lot of us just fine.
