How We Review Metal Detectors
Honest, UK-focused detector reviews from a real detectorist. This page explains exactly how the scores are worked out, when a review comes from my own arm and when it comes from the wider community, and what stops anything ever getting full marks just to sell it.

Why this page exists
If a website rates a metal detector nine out of ten, the only question that really matters is “compared to what, and judged by whom?” This page answers that. It lays out how Detectorist World rates the detectors on the site, what each score actually measures, and what stops me ever handing out full marks to make a buy button look better.
I have been detecting for around fifteen years, mostly across Lincolnshire, and I have owned a run of machines from cheap Garrett Aces up to my trusty Nokta Simplex. I have not owned every detector ever made, and I am not going to pretend otherwise. How I handle that honestly is the first thing worth explaining.
First-hand or research-based: you will always know which
Every review on this site is clearly one of two things, and it says so near the top.
First-hand reviews
A machine I have personally owned and used properly, over many trips and different soil types. Written from real experience, the good and the annoying, with the community view folded in to keep me honest. Only a handful of detectors fall here, because they are the ones I have genuinely lived with.
Research-based reviews
A machine I have not owned. Instead of faking it, I go through years of long-term owner reports, forums, Reddit, YouTube field tests and the reviewers who put the hours in, and boil it down to an honest summary of where the community has landed. These reviews open by telling you plainly that they are research-based.
I would much rather be straight with you about which is which than dress up a spec sheet as a field test. That single distinction is the heart of how this site works.
How the research actually happens
For a research-based review, I am not reading the brochure and reshuffling the adjectives. I am looking for genuine consensus among people who have used the machine for real: the long-running forum threads, the owners still talking about a detector years after they bought it, the video reviewers who test rather than unbox, and the honest dealers. The detecting community is large, knowledgeable and refreshingly unsentimental. Where it is divided, I say so rather than pretending there is a tidy answer.
How the score works
Every detector has an overall score out of ten and a star rating out of five. They are the same number shown two ways: overall divided by two gives the stars, rounded to the nearest half. The overall score is the average of five sub-scores, each marked out of ten and each weighted equally at twenty per cent. No secret sauce, and no thumb on the scale.

Ease of use
How quickly a real person can switch on and start finding metal that is not a drinks can: the menus, the audio, sensible factory settings, weight and balance, and the learning curve. A high score means the machine gets out of your way, not that it is dumbed down.
Detection depth
What the detector realistically reaches in proper, mineralised UK ground, not on a copper test plate in a lab. Manufacturer claims get a fistful of salt. Depth is the difference between hearing the old, deep signal and walking straight over it.
Build quality
Whether it survives a hedge, a stile and six hours of rain. Shaft flex, coil ears, strain reliefs, connector corrosion, weatherproofing and battery construction all add up over a season. The least glamorous score, and the one others skip most.
Value for money
Judged against realistic UK street price, not inflated list price. A cheap machine that does its job well scores brilliantly here; an expensive one that only nudges ahead of a far cheaper rival will not.
Versatility
How many jobs it does well. A do-everything all-rounder beats a one-trick machine. A dedicated gold or beach specialist scores lower here on purpose, which is an honest reflection of what it was built for, not a criticism.
What the numbers actually mean
Most machines on this site land between six and nine, because genuinely terrible detectors are rarely interesting enough to write about at length.

| Below 5 | Poor. Weaknesses that genuinely affect the detecting experience. |
How the "Best for" verdicts are written
Each detector page carries short verdicts for specific jobs: beach, gold, beginners, coins and relics. These are not auto-filled. Each is written for that machine based on its real strengths and weaknesses. If a detector simply is not suited to a job, for example a single-frequency entry-level machine is not a salt-beach tool, that verdict says so plainly rather than forcing a compliment it has not earned.
Affiliate links, and why they never move a score
Where Detectorist World uses affiliate links, to Amazon and a small number of specialist UK dealers, the site may earn a small commission if you buy through one. Every page that carries a link also carries a clear affiliate disclosure, and if you would rather buy without the link, just type the detector’s name into your browser yourself.
The part that matters: that commission has no effect on the score, on where a detector sits in a comparison table, or on whether it gets reviewed at all. A machine I rate highly earns the site nothing more than one I would steer you away from, so there is no reason to inflate anything.
What I do not do
No perfect tens
No detector ever scores a flat ten. Nothing is flawless, and a ten would be a lie.
No paid placements
If a brand ever sends a sample, the review meets the same standard and the page says so. No brand has asked me to change a score, and if one did, this page would tell you.
No buried discontinued models
If a detector is out of production, the page says so clearly and points to its closest current replacement, rather than chasing residual search traffic.
No rigged rankings
Comparison tables sort by score, price or name as you choose. The default never quietly favours whatever pays the most.
How often pages are updated
A detector’s score is not fixed forever. Where a firmware update genuinely changes how a machine behaves, where a reliability problem comes to light, or where better real-world data emerges from the community, the review is revisited and the score adjusted. The “last updated” date on each page is the date it was last properly looked at, not a timestamp nudged to look fresh.
